In absolute terms, however, the chance of any single message being intercepted is low. It's difficult for a malicious person on the opposite side of the world to reach into your local post office and pluck your correspondence out, but it's not hard to spy on e-mail traffic if you know where it's originating. Not for any special reason necessarily, just that the number of potential adversaries is higher. In terms of how likely it is that your message will be intercepted, webmail is definitely more vulnerable.
